About Mohammad Shams Langroodi

                       

Shams Langroodi was born in Langrood , a costal town near The Caspian Sea in 1951. He did his primary and secondary education in his hometown and graduated in Mathematics. In 1971 he entered the Maddrese Aali bazarghani( university of finance) and got a BA in Economics in 1974.

He soon found a job as the expert in agricultural economy in the Ministry of Agriculture in Rasht.

He could get access to Iranian rich classical literature since childhood through his father who was a man of letters. And from early youth he grew a passion towards modern literature especially modern poetry.

 

In 1977 he published his first poetry book titled :" Raftar-e Teshnegi'       ( Behavior of thirst).

 

He quitted his job and left  Rasht for Tehran where he found a job at Kanoon Parvaresh Koodakan Va Nojavanan (Center for cultural development of children and young adults) as an expert in literature. Beside this he entered for the drama training classes of "Anahita" supervised by Mostafa Oskooi ,a prominent theatrical figure in Iran.       A few months after the break out Of the Iranian Revolution in 1979 he was fired from the center alongside with many other intellectuals.

He took up different jobs to earn the living such as teaching in different levels, accounting and etc…

 

He was arrested as a political activist in October 1981 and spent 6 months in jail. After the release from the prison he looked for a job and for a long time he was not able to find one. He finally got a job as an editor of historical books in the National Heritage Center. From this period on he focused mainly on poetry writing and research on literature and in less than ten years he published ten books of poetry and research. His major research on Iranian modern poetry with the title of" Tarikh-e tahlili She'r- no"(An Analytic History of Modern poetry) in four volumes enjoyed great popularity and admire from Iranian literature lovers. Parts of this book were translated into different languages including English (by Dr Ahmad Karimi Hakkak) to be used as reference.

 

Since 1994 Shams Langroodi has been invited to various academic and cultural centers throughout the world to recite his poetry and give speeches on Iranian literature. He spent nearly the whole 90s abroad during which he met prominent international figures such as Seamus Heaney,(Nobel Prize winner)  Cislaw Milos,( Nobel Prize winner) Adonis,( famous Arab poet) Paul Suisie(the former editor of Monthly Review)and etc…

 

In spite of harsh and sometimes impossible condition for literary activists in Iran, Shams has challenged a life full of achievements by publishing numerous articles in journals and some poetry books which all have been loved by readers in Iran.

His works have been nominated for literary prizes many times most of which have been refused by officials. But private literary circles have awarded prizes such as Jalali Prize( for poetry) in 2002 and Goharan Prize(for literary achievements) in2008.

 

His poetry has been translated to some other languages .His latest book of poetry "53 Love Songs" was translated into Kurdish and Arabic.

Some of his poems have appeared on Stuttgart buses and trams in German and are still displayed there.

 

Shams Langroodi is one of the most appreciated and prominent literary figures in Iran an his works enjoy great popularity among Iranian literature lovers. There have been many honoring meetings held by different cultural centers for him,the last of which was held by the Faculty of Literature of  Karaj Azad University in 2008.

 

Shams now lives in Iran and is a non-governmental lecturer in literature in different universities.
